Finch

I came across Finch recently and it’s honestly great! There are so many apps out there promising to change our ADHD lives, but most of them are about planning and scheduling. Finch doesn’t mention ADHD until it’s included in a list of challenges which is refreshing. It’s a free game which is similar to Tamagotchi, and your wellbeing is linked with the wellbeing of your little bird. There are in-app purchases.

Choose what you want to focus on – it could be sleep, eating, exercise, tasks, organisation – and your bird will remind you of the steps you need to take today. You can add your own goals or use the suggestions. As you tick off the goals your bird gets more healthy and happy.

The graphics are cute and it reminds me a bit of Pokemon as your bird grows and gains maturity. I’ve only just started but it’s engaging and it certainly has a novelty and game factor which is making me want to know what comes next. I’ll do some more with the app and edit with a review soon.

You can find out more on the Finch website here.

I have ADHD and most of the apps seem to be built for the two week hyper fixation period and then aren’t very useful after. It’s just another list and another alarm.

I’ve been using Finch for 40 days and it’s different. It’s a soft reminder system that makes checking in mildly rewarding. I got rid of 90% of the default features and use it to keep track of the stuff I forget – if I space it twice, it’s going on Finch. It’s also my list-of-lists.

I have realized that the reason I don’t, say, trim my nails when I remember is that the effort of remembering sucks up all the energy to do the thing. With Finch, it’s all there…and doing the thing is just rewarding enough to make it happen. After all, my bird deserves a tiara and we are only 10 points away.

I’m also using it to remember parenting intentions and create more consistency. Sitting with a thought for a week results in good change.
