I realised that I’m happiest when I’m moving, so watching box sets and movies is a challenge for me. I like to knit or sew, doodle on paper, or scroll endlessly through social media with one eye on the TV and one eye on the iPad. But since I bought some toys designed for fidgeting and it’s been great – I can focus much better on the TV screen.
Online meetings have also been a struggle sometimes, but having these fidget toys on standby has really made a difference. I can hold them below the view of the webcam, and they can’t be seen by colleagues. Some of them make a clicking sound, so I choose the silent ones when my mic is likely to be on.
Times I used fidget toys to keep my hands moving include: watching a movie, at the dentist, in an online meeting, in a waiting room or waiting in the car, and travelling. I can especially recommend the little cubes, as they have a few different buttons and switches to play with, and it’s easy to carry them around.
I still get restless when I’m waiting or watching, but now I can keep my hands busy without being too obvious about it.
