Nothing makes me more happy than rearranging the furniture. I think I get a dopamine hit from the novelty of the new layout. Lots of people mention this compulsive furniture moving and I know my grandmother did it too. My group of ADHD friends often laugh about the odd things we have in common and we are finding new things all the time.

Several women in the group are into DIY and it’s brilliant listening to them comparing power tools and describing their projects. A lot of us also crotchet, knit and make patchworks – making things with our hands seems crucial even if the object doesn’t get finished. Perhaps the process of making and creating with our hands is more important than the finished product.

Military history – anyone? A couple of us found a mutual interest in this traditionally blokey subject and it got us thinking about gendered interests and how as ADHD women we often find that we have more in common with our male friends. I’m involved with a group of wood working craftsmen for example – and I mean MEN. Very few women get involved in wood craft much as we try and encourage them.

If you feel out of step with your friends and family, not fitting in and not interested in the same things – maybe that’s ok. You might find a new circle who share your odd interests and strange hobbies. Join a club, sign up to a forum – you are not alone.

What our students say

Hear from coaches who have completed training with Barrett Coaching and Training and gone on to develop their practice.

“This training completely changed my career path. I went from feeling unsure to feeling confident and equipped to work with ADHD clients.

What stood out most was how genuinely neuro-affirming the experience felt, and how much it deepened my own understanding of ADHD.”

I finished the course feeling confident, capable, and excited about the work I’m now doing with clients.”
